Adult swimming lessons in Heywood.
Start with a conversation.
Looking for adult swimming lessons in Heywood? JG Fitness runs a four-month course for adults: two 30-minute lessons a week, at £20 a lesson, or £500 for the whole course if you pay up front.
Whether you can’t swim yet or can swim a bit and want more confidence, the lessons are one-to-one and start from where you are. The first course starts in January 2027, with five coaching places in total.
Confidence comes before a bigger plan.
Coaching with James
Your goals. Your plan.
Tell James how your swimming is now and what you’d like to be able to do. Choose “Swimming” or “Not sure yet” in the form to start the conversation.
Lessons are booked as a four-month course: two 30-minute lessons a week, at £20 a lesson (£500 if you pay for the course up front). James confirms the pool, your lesson times and your start date before you book.
Your starting point is enough.
Adult swimming lessons: how the course works
- Two lessons a week. 30 minutes each, twice a week, so you’re back in the water before you forget what you practised.
- A four-month course. 32 lessons over 16 weeks, booked as one block. That’s time to build real confidence, not just get through a taster.
- £20 a lesson, or £500 up front. £640 for the whole course, or £500 if you pay for it in one go: a saving of £140. Join the waiting list for free, or pay a £49 deposit, which comes off your total.
- One-to-one, built around you. Just you and James, at the pool of your choice. Before your first lesson, James asks what you want to work on: getting comfortable in the water, your first strokes, your breathing, or swimming further without stopping.
Between lessons, you can practise with the free Swimming Exercises library: drills, a four-week pool plan and a download pack. It’s self-guided and written for adults who can already swim lengths, so it goes alongside the lessons rather than replacing them.

How much do adult swimming lessons cost?
£20 a lesson. Lessons are booked as a four-month course of two 30-minute lessons a week: 32 lessons over 16 weeks, £640 in total. Pay for the whole course up front and it’s £500, a saving of £140. You can join the waiting list for free, or pay a £49 deposit, which comes off your total.
Is there a discount for paying up front?
Yes. Pay for the whole course in one go and it’s £500 instead of £640. That saves you £140, and works out at under £16 a lesson instead of £20.
How long is each lesson, and how often?
Each lesson is 30 minutes, twice a week, for four months. Twice a week means you’re back in the water before you forget what you practised, and four months gives you time to build real confidence.
Are the lessons one-to-one?
Yes. Every lesson is just you and James, so it goes at your pace and works on what you need.
Which pool will we use?
At the pool of your choice. A pool membership doesn’t automatically allow an outside coach, so James checks the pool’s permission and access before your lessons are booked.
Can you teach me to swim from scratch?
Yes. Lessons can start right at the beginning, with getting comfortable in the water, at whatever pace suits you.
I’m nervous in the water. Is that OK?
Yes. Plenty of adults feel nervous in the water. Say so in the form, and the first lessons go at your pace.
What do I need to bring?
Your swimwear, a towel and a pair of goggles. If you need kit, there are a few ideas in the swim section of the recommended kit page.
Can you help me get ready for a triathlon swim?
Yes. James has raced a full Ironman and three half Ironmans. If you want help with all three sports, choose “Swim, bike & run” in the January form.
How do I book adult swimming lessons?
Start with the form on this page. James emails you a few short questions about your swimming, then confirms the pool, your lesson times and your start date before you book. Sending the form doesn’t take a payment or book a place.
Is the free swimming resource the same as lessons?
No. Swimming Exercises is a free, self-guided set of drills and a four-week pool plan for adults who can already swim lengths. It’s handy for practising between lessons.
Who teaches the lessons?
James Gonzo. He’s been swimming for 12 years to a high standard, has raced a full Ironman and three half Ironmans, and swimming is still part of his own weekly training. He’s also a British Army veteran. You can read more about James.
When does it start, and how many places are there?
Coaching starts in January 2027. James is coaching a maximum of five people in total, so places are limited.
