Running coaching in Heywood.
Start where you are.
Looking for a running coach in Heywood? JG Fitness is for people who want to build gradually from the routine they have now — including a first run, walking breaks or a return after time away.
The January 2027 intake is limited to five coaching places. The first step is an honest conversation about your starting point, not a promise of a pace, distance or result.
Build gradually, not perfectly.
Coaching with James
Your goals. Your plan.
The existing JG Fitness approach is simple: walking breaks count, small steps count and a starting plan needs to fit real life. Choose “Running” in the form, and James will email you a few short questions about what you are doing now.
That gives James a starting point for a coaching conversation. It does not replace medical assessment, injury rehabilitation or a guarantee that a particular event or result is appropriate.
Your starting point is enough.
A practical place to begin
There is also a free Running Exercises resource with a strength and mobility library plus a four-week running-support plan. It is separate from coaching and is available through its own email-access route.
See Running Exercises →Questions before you enquire
How much does running coaching with JG Fitness cost?
£20 an hour. You can join the waiting list for free, or pay a £49 deposit, which comes off your total. Your start date and terms are agreed with James before you commit.
Where will we run?
On parks and paths around Heywood, or a route of your choice. Sessions are face to face, with online sessions too if that suits you better.
I can’t run for a minute yet. Is this for me?
Yes. Plenty of people start by walking with short bits of running. Walking breaks count, and the plan starts from what you can do now, not what you think you should be able to do.
Can coaching help with Couch to 5K?
Yes. The free NHS Couch to 5K app is a great place to start, and the free Couch to 5K Strength plan goes alongside it. Coaching is for when you’d like someone in your corner: someone to run with you, sort your pace out and keep you going when week five feels like a mountain.
How do the sessions work?
One-hour sessions, booked as often as suits you. Before you start, James emails you a few short questions about your goals and your week, including how many days you can train (1–2, 3, or 4 or more), so the plan fits around your routine.
What if I’m returning after time away?
You’re very welcome. Choose “Running” or “Not sure yet” in the form and say where you’re starting from. The plan builds back up from there.
Is this a promise of a race result?
No. Coaching is about a realistic starting point and steady progress. It doesn’t promise an event, a pace, a distance or a result.
Who will be coaching me?
James Gonzo. He’s a British Army veteran who has been running for more than 30 years, with a full Ironman, three half Ironmans and three 50 km ultras behind him. You can read more about James and follow his own training.
When does it start, and how many places are there?
Coaching starts in January 2027. James is coaching a maximum of five people in total, so places are limited.
